CO2-emission-free electrocatalytic CH3OH selective upgrading with high productivity at large current densities for energy saved hydrogen co-generation

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: The defects-rich Ni3S2-CNFs nanoheterostructures exhibit robust electrocatalytic performance for selectively catalyzing methanol to formate with high productivity and no CO2 emission, achieving large current density (>700 mA cm(-2)) with high faradaic efficiency (>90%). The synergistic effect of in situ formed Ni-OOH and SOx species effectively modulate the d band center of Ni3S2, acting as unique collaborative active sites for the thermodynamically favorable conversion from methanol to formate and suppressing the further oxidation to CO2, resulting in high activity and selectivity of CO2-emission-free methanol upgrading reaction.

Concave-convex surface oxide layers over copper nanowires boost electrochemical nitrate-to-ammonia conversion

Tianlun Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, Cu nanowires with concave-convex surface Cu2+1O layers were prepared for efficient nitrate electroreduction to ammonia. The electronic interactions and interface effects between Cu and Cu2+1O contribute to the improved electroreduction ability over the Cu@Cu2+1O NWs. Tailoring surface/interface properties and atom structure can lead to highly efficient electrocatalysts for ammonia synthesis.

Advances in noble metal (Ru, Rh, and Ir) doping for boosting water splitting electrocatalysis

Lin Tian et al.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting holds promise for producing high-density and green hydrogen, but the slow H2O dissociation process hinders industrial scale applications due to low H2O adsorption on catalyst surfaces. Efforts in exploring efficient approaches to fabricate electrocatalysts with appropriate H2O adsorption include defect engineering, interface engineering, and morphology design. Noble metal doping, particularly with metals like Ru, Rh, and Ir, plays a crucial role in optimizing the adsorption of reaction intermediates on catalyst surfaces, and has attracted significant research interest. This review highlights recent examples and mechanisms of noble metal doping in boosting water splitting electrocatalysis, along with challenges and future outlooks for practical applications.
