Mn-O Covalency Governs the Intrinsic Activity of Co-Mn Spinel Oxides for Boosted Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Zhi-Yan Guo et al.

Summary: The covalency of TM-O bonds plays a critical role in governing the intrinsic catalytic activity of bimetallic spinel oxides, enhancing electron transfer and favoring interactions with PMS. By balancing PMS adsorption and metal reduction reactions, remarkable catalytic activities for PMS activation and pollutant degradation can be achieved, leading to the development of more active and robust metal oxide catalysts.

Novel lignin-based single atom catalysts as peroxymonosulfate activator for pollutants degradation: Role of single cobalt and electron transfer pathway

Yuanfeng Qi et al.

Summary: A nitrogen coordinated Co single-atom catalyst was fabricated using lignin as carbon sources through a one-pot pyrolytic strategy. The isolated Co atoms in the SA Co-N/C architecture served as the main active sites for naproxen degradation, exhibiting exceptional performance with a high turnover frequency. Electron transfer induced by the single-atom Co sites was identified as the dominated mechanism for the NPX degradation.

Engineered carbon supported single iron atom sites and iron clusters from Fe-rich Enteromorpha for Fenton-like reactions via nonradical pathways

Lijng Peng et al.

Summary: Enteromorpha, a seawater pollutant, was converted into a functional carbocatalyst for Fenton-like reactions. The Enteromorpha-derived Fe-N-C exhibited high activity in activating peroxymonosulfate for organic pollutant degradation. Single Fe atoms played a crucial role as dominant reactive sites in forming highly oxidizing Fe-IV=O and Fe-V=O species.

Understanding spatial effects of tetrahedral and octahedral cobalt cations on peroxymonosulfate activation for efficient pollution degradation

Zhe Xu et al.

Summary: Identifying the spatial effects of cobalt cations in cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts is essential for developing effective peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators in water treatment. The study found that octahedral cobalt species exhibit superior intrinsic activities compared to tetrahedral ones, and interface kinetics characterized by systemic electrochemical techniques determine the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Additionally, the flat band potentials of cobalt-based oxides reflecting Fermi level positions play a role in activating PMS.
