Disruptive Technologies and Operations Management in the Industry 4.0 Era and Beyond

Tsan-Ming Choi et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between disruptive technologies in the Industry 4.0 era and operations management. It analyzes their current applications, pros and cons, as well as potential areas of human-machine conflict. Moreover, measures to achieve human-machine reconciliation and sustainable social welfare are proposed, along with a discussion on the role of policy makers. Finally, a future research agenda covering both the Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 eras is established.

Financing Product Development Projects in the Blockchain Era: Initial Coin Offerings Versus Traditional Bank Loans

Tsan-Ming Choi

Summary: In this article, the impact of traditional bank financing and ICO financing on product development projects is examined through theoretical models. The optimal pricing and quality decisions, as well as the profitability of start-up companies, are compared under both financing models. The study reveals significant differences between the two financing modes.

Managing foreign exchange risk with buyer-supplier contracts

Latha Shanker et al.

Summary: The study models the optimal choice of contract terms for a foreign exchange risk sharing supply contract between buyers and suppliers in different countries who are mean variance expected utility maximizers. Empirical application of the model shows that the risk sharing contract significantly improves the total expected utility of both partners compared to wholesale price contracts without risk hedging and risk transfer contracts.

Sustainable supply chain planning for biomass-based power generation with environmental risk and supply uncertainty considerations: a real-life case study

Mohammad Fattahi et al.

Summary: This paper explores the design and planning of a supply chain system for power generation from biomass. By developing a two-stage stochastic programming model, the study analyzes various factors affecting the system, including social and environmental aspects. Through social life cycle assessment (S-LCA), the social impact is quantified and sustainability is improved by reducing environmental risks. The research findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the stochastic model in assessing economic potential and guiding the planning of the supply chain system.

Addressing systemic risk using contingent convertible debt - A network analysis

Aparna Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, a balance sheet network model was constructed to examine the interconnectedness of a banking system. The simulation analysis focused on the buffer effect of contingent convertible (CoCo) debt in controlling contagion in a theoretical banking network model, and the model was calibrated using 13F filings. It was found that CoCo debt conversion can significantly mitigate systemic risk, with a dual-trigger CoCo debt design being more effective in protecting surviving banks.

Using Schedule Risk Analysis with resource constraints for project control

Jie Song et al.

Summary: Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) provides reliable activity sensitivity information for corrective actions during project control. This study extends traditional SRA metrics with RC-SRA metrics for resource constrained projects, and introduces new resource-based sensitivity metrics. Computational experiments show that the RC-SRA metrics can identify activities with higher sensitivity values. Activity selection strategies and corrective actions are proposed, with findings suggesting that reducing activity durations is more effective than reducing resource demand, especially when updated dynamically during project execution.

A risk-averse approach for the planning of a hybrid energy system with conventional hydropower

Ozlem Cavus et al.

Summary: This study introduces a risk-averse two-stage stochastic programming model for planning a hybrid energy system with a conventional hydropower component. By using Conditional Value-at-Risk, the model considers risk dispersion due to uncertain streamflow amount, and proposes a solution approach based on scenario decomposition. A case study in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey demonstrates the computational power of the approach and the ability to solve instances that cannot be handled by CPLEX.

Creating all-win by blockchain technology in supply chains: Impacts of agents' risk attitudes towards cryptocurrency

Tsan-Ming Choi

Summary: This paper examines the different risk attitudes of supply chain agents towards the use of cryptocurrency, analyzes the impact of blockchain and cryptocurrency in the supply chain through modeling, and reveals the conditions under which implementing blockchain with cryptocurrency achieves an all-win situation for all supply chain agents and consumers. The critical factors affecting the adoption of blockchain with cryptocurrency in supply chains are further investigated.

Complexity Results and Effective Algorithms for Worst-Case Linear Optimization Under Uncertainties

Hezhi Luo et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the worst-case linear optimization problem with uncertainties on the right-hand side of the constraints, proving its NP-hardness and proposing an algorithm that combines optimization techniques to find globally optimal solutions. The article also introduces a finite branch-and-bound algorithm for a specific instance of the problem and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms through numerical experiments on medium and large-scale instances.

Platform Supported Supply Chain Operations in the Blockchain Era: Supply Contracting and Moral Hazards*

Ya-Jun Cai et al.

Summary: Platform operations are common in the sharing economy, allowing retailers to sell leftover products to platforms offering rental services. However, these operations can lead to a triple marginalization problem, which can be addressed with a markdown sponsor contract but may also result in a moral hazard problem. This moral hazard problem can bring losses to manufacturers and immoral gains to retailers.
