Above- and Below-ground Cascading Effects of Wild Ungulates in Temperate Forests

J. Ignacio Ramirez et al.

Summary: The study found that ungulates can trigger cascading effects on lower trophic levels in temperate forests, leading to decreased sapling density, reduced rodent activity, lower litter depth, indirectly reduced invertebrate diversity, and increased soil compaction. However, decomposition and mineralization rates were found to be resilient to ungulate browsing and trampling. Increasing ungulate abundance was also shown to strengthen these cascading effects in the ecosystem.
