Summary: Pathology, like many medical specialties, is working to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion. Strategies such as increasing exposure to the field, holistic application review processes, and addressing implicit biases have been shown to promote diversity and encourage an inclusive and equitable training environment. Increasing access to elective and pipeline programs may also help to boost medical student interest in pathology careers.

Osteopathic students and graduates matching into pathology residency, 2011-2020

Summary: In the past decade, there has been an increase in the number and percentage of DOs choosing pathology residency, while the number of US MD seniors choosing the same has declined. Despite the decrease in US MD seniors choosing pathology, the proportion of DOs choosing this specialty has remained steady, with a preference for other medical specialties overall. Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind this trend.
