The enigma of persistent symptoms in hypothyroid patients treated with levothyroxine: A narrative review

Petros Perros et al.

Summary: A significant minority of patients with hypothyroidism continue to experience symptoms despite normal thyroid biochemistry, and this can be attributed to imperfections in treatment methods, coexistence with somatic symptom and related disorders, autoimmune neuroinflammation, and comorbidities and psychosocial factors. Currently, there is a bias towards pursuing answers related to combination treatment of levothyroxine and liothyronine, while other explanations have been neglected.

New Formulations of Levothyroxine in the Treatment of Hypothyroidism: Trick or Treat?

Endre Nagy et al.

Summary: New LT4 formulations may be more suitable for patients with disease fluctuations and intermittent therapies with interfering medications, potentially reducing the need for frequent dose adjustments and office visits compared to traditional LT4 tablets. However, the therapeutic equivalence of these new formulations in different clinical settings remains unclear, and further research is needed to explore their potential benefits and cost-effectiveness.

Increased risk of dementia in hypothyroidism: A Danish nationwide register-based study

Marianne Thvilum et al.

Summary: The study found that hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk of dementia, with the association influenced by comorbidity and age. Additionally, every 6 months of elevated TSH was found to increase the risk of dementia by 12%, indicating that the length of hypothyroidism also plays a role in influencing dementia risk.

What Is the Quality of Life in Patients Treated with Levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism and How Are We Measuring It? A Critical, Narrative Review

Francoise Borson-Chazot et al.

Summary: Thyroid hormone replacement therapy using levothyroxine is effective in treating hypothyroidism, but some patients still experience persistent symptoms that impact their quality of life. Studies show that overt hypothyroidism patients experience improved psychological well-being after three to six months of THRT, while combination treatment may not lead to better quality of life. Various factors beyond thyroid hormone levels can influence quality of life in hypothyroidism.
