The wildlife-livestock interface on extensive free-ranging pig farms in central Spain during the montanera period

Roxana Triguero-Ocana et al.

Summary: The study revealed that direct interactions between wild and domestic ungulates were scarce, while indirect interactions were very frequent, with red deer being the most involved species. Factors influencing ifreq include time of the day, distance to water, and differences in activity patterns of the species. Food resource availability also predicted ifreq, especially at short time windows and between wild species.

Review: Precision livestock farming, automats and new technologies: possible applications in extensive dairy sheep farming

M. Odintsov Vaintrub et al.

Summary: Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies are increasingly common in modern agriculture, particularly in concentrated farming operations and pasture-based systems. The Mediterranean extensive sheep farming sector is particularly interested in developing technologies for grazing animals. While developed countries have highly specialized production systems, extensive systems are still practiced due to lower input costs and market resilience. Adoption of new technologies in extensive farming may face financial barriers, but future trends such as global sheep milk economics and European agricultural policies may promote wider adoption of PLF systems in the near future.

Foraging Behavior of Heritage versus Desert-Adapted Commercial Rangeland Beef Cows in Relation to Dam-Offspring Contact Patterns

Shelemia Nyamuryekung'e et al.

Summary: The study compared behavior and contact patterns between heritage Raramuri Criollo (RC) and desert-adapted commercial Angus Hereford crossbred (AH) beef cattle in Chihuahuan Desert pastures. Results showed that RC cow-calf contacts were more frequent, RC cows traveled further each day, and spent less time resting compared to AH counterparts.

Application of depth sensor to estimate body mass and morphometric assessment in Nellore heifers

Scheila Geiele Kamchen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of using an RGB-D sensor for estimating the body mass and morphometric measurements of Nellore heifers through image analysis. The results showed that it is possible to accurately estimate the heifers' body weight using a depth sensor, demonstrating high accuracy.

Foraging behaviour of gestating sows on pasture and damages to vegetation cover are influenced by restriction of concentrate feed

Lydiane Aube et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of concentrate feed restriction on gestating sows' foraging behavior and vegetation cover. It found that higher concentrate restriction promoted grazing behavior in pregnant sows, leading to disappearance of high vegetation while lower concentrate restriction increased rooting activity, causing greater damage to vegetation cover. Additionally, the study showed that reducing concentrate feed level of gestating sows on pasture did not have adverse effects on pasture vegetation cover.

Opportunities to Apply Precision Livestock Management on Rangelands

Derek W. Bailey et al.

Summary: Precision livestock management utilizes real-time GPS tracking, accelerometers, and other sensor technologies to remotely detect livestock diseases, welfare, and grazing distribution issues, improving the accuracy and efficiency of livestock management. By combining GPS tracking with accelerometer monitoring, livestock behavior and health status can be more accurately monitored, providing timely feedback and alerts to ranch managers.
