Singlet oxygen and dioxygen bond cleavage in the aprotic lithium-oxygen battery

Shanmu Dong et al.

Summary: Investigation of lithium-oxygen cells on discharge revealed that Li2O2 formation occurs predominantly through disproportionation, and singlet oxygen O-1(2) generation mainly comes from the scrambling pathway. By controlling the pathway of this step, it may be possible to suppress O-1(2) formation, thereby prolonging the degradation of lithium-oxygen batteries.

Singlet Oxygen in Electrochemical Cells: A Critical Review of Literature and Theory

Adrian Schuermann et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) may be the root cause of poor cyclability and rapid degradation in metal/O-2 batteries. However, current experimental evidence is not yet conclusive regarding the existence of singlet oxygen, and side reactions may also play a significant role in verifying its presence.

Singlet Oxygen in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Misun Hong et al.

Summary: Singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) plays a critical role in parasitic side reactions and poor reversibility in non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries. Efforts have been made to understand the formation and elimination of O-1(2) and to trap and eliminate it using molecular agents. Promising physical quenchers that convert O-1(2) to O-3(2) have been identified for improving the cycling performance of Li-O-2 cells.
