Integration of aspects of bipolar electrochemistry may lead to new ideas and unexpected directions in research.

Peculiar role of the electrolyte viscosity in the electrochemical capacitor performance

Summary: This study finds that the influence of increased viscosity on the performance of symmetric carbon/carbon electrochemical capacitors is complex and depends significantly on the texture/structure properties of carbon electrodes. However, the application of viscous electrolytes can be beneficial in terms of reducing leakage current and internal gas evolution. Furthermore, it is possible to retain high power and energy performance even with a 104-fold increase in viscosity for devices with well-designed micro-/mesoporous interconnectivity in carbon materials.
