Ferric Heme Superoxide Reductive Transformations to Ferric Heme (Hydro)Peroxide Species: Spectroscopic Characterization and Thermodynamic Implications for H-Atom Transfer (HAT)

Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: A new end-on low-spin ferric heme peroxide and subsequent hydroperoxide species were generated using iron-porphyrinate P-Im with its tethered imidazolyl group, with the OO-H bond-dissociation free energy of the hydroperoxide determined through thermodynamic parameters. The results were validated by observing the oxidizing ability of the superoxide complexes via hydrogen-atom transfer compared to a control group without the internally appended axial base imidazolyl.

Widening the Window of Spin-Crossover Temperatures in Bis(formazanate)iron(II) Complexes via Steric and Noncovalent Interactions

Francesca Milocco et al.

Summary: This study investigated how steric effects, pi-stacking interactions, and electronic substituent effects impact the spin-crossover behavior of Bis(formazanate)iron(II) complexes. Six new compounds were synthesized and characterized, with the inclusion of additional OMe donors resulting in a significant shift in spin-crossover temperatures.

Structure and Reactivity of a High-Spin, Nonheme Iron(III)-Superoxo Complex Supported by Phosphinimide Ligands

Charles Winslow et al.

Summary: This research has developed a ligand platform with phosphinimide donors to stabilize oxidized, high-spin iron complexes, leading to the successful trapping of a terminally bound Fe-O-2 complex in a crystal, allowing for XRD characterization. Spectroscopic and computational studies support a high-spin Fe(III) center antiferromagnetically coupled to a superoxide ligand, demonstrating the potential of this synthetic Fe-O-2 complex for various oxidation processes.

Structural and Spectroscopic Evidence for a Side-on Fe(III)- Superoxo Complex Featuring Discrete O-O Bond Distances

Hung-Ruei Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that three crystallographic forms of a side-on iron-dioxygen species have distinct O-O bond lengths, but possess the same electronic structure. The different O-O bond lengths likely arise from differential intermolecular interactions in the second coordination sphere.

Proton-coupled electron transfer reactivities of electronically divergent heme superoxide intermediates: a kinetic, thermodynamic, and theoretical study

Pritam Mondal et al.

Summary: Heme superoxides are versatile metallo-intermediates in biology, facilitating a wide range of oxidation and oxygenation reactions involving O-2(g). The electronic factors of heme center modulate the feasibility of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes, influencing both thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. Understanding these electronic effects is pivotal in biological heme systems and alternative energy applications.
