Exponential Increase in an Ionic Signal: A Dominant Role of the Space Charge Effect on the Outer Surface of Nanochannels

Xiaoqing Wu et al.

Summary: The ionic signal on the outer surface of nanochannels is primarily affected by the dominant space charge effect, rather than the commonly believed steric hindrance effect, as verified by using electroneutral peptides and negatively charged DNA. This challenges the traditional understanding of the role of steric hindrance in ionic signal transduction in nanochannels.

Towards explicit regulating-ion-transport: nanochannels with only function-elements at outer-surface

Qun Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that function elements at the outer surface can independently regulate ion transport in nanochannel systems without the presence of inner wall function elements. Nanochannel systems with explicit properties of only outer surface function elements have advantages in promoting power density, increasing ionic selectivity, and accommodating large size probes or targets.

Revealing Ionic Signal Enhancement with Probe Grafting Density on the Outer Surface of Nanochannels

Tianle Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of probe grafting density on the outer surface of nanochannels on the change rate of ionic signals before and after target recognition. The experimental results show that with the same number of targets, the beta value increases with the probe grafting density. A theoretical model is established with clearly defined physical properties of each probe and target, while numerical simulations suggest that background current decrease and target aggregation contribute to signal enhancement. This work reveals the signal mechanism of probe-target recognition and suggests a general approach to sensitive nanochannel/nanopore design with good selectivity.

Influence of finite ion size and dielectric decrement on the ion current rectification in a single conical nanopore

Doyel Pandey et al.

Summary: The ion current rectification (ICR) in geometrically asymmetric nanopores due to finite size of ions and dielectric decrement leads to counterion saturation, which attenuates the surface charge shielding effect, resulting in larger zeta-potential, volume flux, and reduced conduction. Ion steric interactions and dielectric decrement significantly influence the ICR phenomena and ion selectivity of conical nanopores, especially for moderate to high surface charge density, bulk concentration, and applied bias. The variation of ICR with temperature is found to be marginal, and the volume flux and rectification factor of the conical nanopore can be adjusted by adding larger counterion size salt or multivalent ions.

Summary: The study presents a method for large-scale preparation of GO nanofilms with Z-MXene, achieving multicomponent lamellar nanofilms with dual and ordered nanochannels. The strong interactions between GO and Z-Mxene nanosheets prevent self-restacking and improve membrane performance.
