Photodegradation of carbon dots cause cytotoxicity

Yue-Yue Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that carbon dots degrade into toxic molecules under light irradiation, affecting both normal and cancerous human cells. The process of CD degradation and production of cytotoxic molecules is influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, light intensity and wavelength. Commercial CDs show similar photodegraded products and cytotoxicity profiles, suggesting that photodegradation-induced cytotoxicity is likely common to CDs regardless of their chemical composition.
