Factors associated with health-related quality of life in patients with cirrhosis: a systematic review

Anahita Rabiee et al.

Summary: Patients with cirrhosis have poor HRQoL, which is influenced by various factors such as depression, muscle cramps, poor sleep, falls, frailty, and malnutrition. Among cirrhosis decompensating events, hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is the complication most commonly associated with poor HRQoL.

Deep stool microbiome analysis in cirrhosis reveals an association between short-chain fatty acids and hepatic encephalopathy

Patricia P. Bloom et al.

Summary: This study identified several fecal bacterial species and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) associated with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Many of the species inversely linked to HE were also associated with SCFA production. Patients with a history of HE had lower concentrations of SCFAs in their feces, but fecal ammonia concentrations were similar between those with and without a history of HE. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between these factors and develop targeted interventions for treating HE.

Probiotics improve the neurometabolic profile of rats with chronic cholestatic liver disease

Veronika Rackayova et al.

Summary: The study found that prophylactic use of the probiotic formulation led to an increase in gut Bifidobacteria and attenuated changes in locomotor activity and neurometabolic profile in a rat model of type C HE. Compared to the BDL group, the BDL+probiotic rats showed improved performance in behavioral tests and neurometabolic profile at week 8 post-BDL. These findings suggest that probiotics may have a potential positive impact on neuropsychiatric complications associated with chronic liver disease.

Fecal Microbial and Metabolomic Change during treatment course for depression: An Observational Study

Shunya Kurokawa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between microbial and metabolomic features and the course of treatment for depression. Results showed that non-responders had lower microbiota diversity and increased estimated glutamate synthesis functions compared to responders and stable remitters, but there were no specific microbiota or metabolome differentiating the three groups. Further controlled studies and animal studies are needed to elucidate the causal relationship between microbiota and depression.

Fecal microbiota transplantation in hepatic encephalopathy: a systematic review

Mathias Madsen et al.

Summary: Studies on FMT as a treatment for HE suggest the potential for improving cognitive function and reducing serious adverse events in patients, but the current research has been limited in scale and duration. Large-scale, randomized, and controlled trials are necessary to validate and standardize the clinical application of FMT in cases of HE.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of rifaximin and probiotics on the treatment of type C hepatic encephalopathy, finding that the combination of rifaximin and probiotics resulted in more limited neurometabolic alterations in BDL rats.
