Effect of manganese on the speciation of neptunium(V) on manganese doped magnetites

Sumit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study reveals that a nanoparticulate (NpO2)-O-IV solid is the only speciation of Np sorbed on both doped and undoped magnetites. The Mn-O sites preferentially sorb Np(V) compared to Fe-O sites, indicating the significant role of impurity atom interacting with sorbing species through redox process. The participation of Mn through Fe(II)/Mn (III) redox couple in reducing sorbed Np(V) becomes significant only when the doped-magnetite contains a critical minimum concentration of Mn (>6 wt%).

Computational and Spectroscopic Tools for the Detection of Bond Covalency in Pu(IV) Materials

Paul S. Bagus et al.

Summary: Plutonium is utilized in new-generation nuclear fuels and Mars rovers' radioisotope batteries, playing a crucial role in both technology and environmental concerns. However, its electronic structure, particularly the covalency of the Pu 5f valence orbitals, remains poorly understood and is at the forefront of actinide science research. Through quantum chemical computations, it was found that the 5f orbitals have minimal covalent character, with the highest orbital energy orbital showing the greatest extent of covalency in PuO2. Additionally, spectroscopy tools have been utilized to probe the electronic structure of Plutonium compounds.

Relativistic Multiconfigurational Ab Initio Calculation of Uranyl 3d4f Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Robert Polly et al.

Summary: Relativistic multiconfigurational all-electron ab initio calculations, including spin-orbit interaction, accurately reproduce experimental results for uranyl's 3d4f resonant 5f inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) map. The calculated data provide insights into the fine structure splitting of 4f orbitals induced by trans di-oxo bonds in uranyl, allowing for a clear understanding of energy differences between 5f and 4f orbitals. Ab initio calculations show the versatility of multiconfigurational protocols in studying RIXS maps of systems containing actinides.

ROBL-II at ESRF: a synchrotron toolbox for actinide research

Andreas C. Scheinost et al.

Summary: ROBL-II at the new EBS storage ring of ESRF provides four experimental stations for the investigation of actinide and other alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides in an energy range of 3 to 35 keV. These stations include XAFS and XES for X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy, XRD-1 for high-resolution powder diffraction and surface-sensitive techniques, and XRD-2 for single crystal and powder diffraction experiments. Elaborate radioprotection features enable safe exchange of samples between the stations for a combination of methods in actinide and environmental research.
