Summary: The review analyzed 8 studies involving 227 UC patients and found that butyrate treatment did not significantly differ from controls in disease activity index, endoscopic and histological scores, but had a significant effect on few inflammatory parameters in colonic mucosal biopsies. The current evidence does not support the use of butyrate enemas in UC, and there is insufficient data regarding their efficacy in CD.
