Exploring the 175-year history of spirometry and the vital lessons it can teach us today

Andrew Kouri et al.

Summary: Hutchinson introduced the terms spirometer and vital capacity 175 years ago, which are still in use today. Spirometry is considered essential for respiratory disease diagnosis, management, and research. Controversies exist in its current applications, while innovations and exploration of complementary technologies may improve its effectiveness in the future.

Prognostic implications of differences in forced vital capacity in black and white US adults: Findings from NHANES III with long-term mortality follow-up

Adam W. Gaffney et al.

Summary: This study found that lower FVC in Black individuals is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, challenging the standard assumption about race-based normal limits. The Black-White disparities in FVC may be attributed to social/environmental factors rather than innate differences.
