NO-mediated signal transmission in bladder vasculature as a therapeutic target of PDE5 inhibitors. Rodent model studies

Hidekazu Tanaka et al.

Summary: Both nitrergic nerve and nerve-evoked endothelial NO release seem to play a role in vasodilatory signal transmission in bladder vasculature. The NO-mediated signal transmission is a potential target for PDE5 inhibitor therapy in bladder dysfunctions.

Sexually dimorphic response of colorectal motility to noxious stimuli in the colorectum in rats

Kazuhiro Horii et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a significant sex difference in the responses of colorectal motility to noxious stimuli in rats, with male rats showing enhanced motility in response to capsaicin compared to female rats. The activation of different types of neurons in the descending pathways after noxious stimulation may be responsible for this sex difference, with serotoninergic and dopaminergic neurons being dominant in males and GABAergic neurons in addition to serotoninergic neurons being activated in females. This provides valuable insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sex differences in functional defaecation disorders like irritable bowel syndrome.

Role of enteric dopaminergic neurons in regulating peristalsis of rat proximal colon

Hiroyuki Nakamori et al.

Summary: The roles of enteric dopaminergic neurons in the generation of colonic peristalsis were investigated by studying the effects of various neurotransmitter blockers on peristaltic waves in rat colonic segments. Dopaminergic neurons appeared to facilitate nitrergic neurons via D-1-like receptors to stabilize asynchronous contractile activity resulting in the generation of colonic peristalsis.
