Reproductive challenges at high altitude: fertility, pregnancy and neonatal well-being

Lorna G. Moore

Summary: In high-altitude conditions, reproductive health is affected by chronic hypoxia. Multi-generational residents appear relatively protected, while newcomers are more likely to experience negative impacts such as fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia. The adaptation to high altitude may involve genetic mechanisms related to blood flow and fetal growth.

Lipid and glucose metabolism in white adipocytes: pathways, dysfunction and therapeutics

Pauline Morigny et al.

Summary: White adipocyte metabolism plays a crucial role in systemic metabolism regulation and is often disrupted in conditions like cancer and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This review provides an overview of lipid metabolism in white adipocytes and discusses how these pathways can serve as therapeutic targets in metabolic disorders.

Late gestation fetal hyperglucagonaemia impairs placental function and results in diminished fetal protein accretion and decreased fetal growth

Sarah N. Cilvik et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a negative effect of glucagon on fetal protein accretion and growth. It also shows that glucagon, a hormone of fetal origin, negatively regulates maternal placental nutrient transport function, placental CSH production, and uterine blood flow.

Dimming the Powerhouse: Mitochondrial Dysfunction in the Liver and Skeletal Muscle of Intrauterine Growth Restricted Fetuses

Alexander L. Pendleton et al.

Summary: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) caused by placental insufficiency (PI) leads to low oxygen and nutrient levels in the fetus, affecting metabolic function in skeletal muscle and liver. Mitochondrial adaptations in response to nutrient restriction in IUGR fetuses may ensure survival, but could also predispose them to metabolic diseases later in life. Understanding the impact of oxygen and substrate deficiencies on skeletal muscle and liver metabolism is crucial for preventing metabolic dysfunction.

Anemic hypoxemia reduces myoblast proliferation and muscle growth in late-gestation fetal sheep

Paul J. Rozance et al.

Summary: Fetal anemic hypoxemia was found to reduce muscle growth, leading to decreased muscle weight and fiber area, as well as reduced myoblast proliferation and differentiation. However, overall protein kinetic rates did not differ significantly between anemic and control fetuses.

Augmented glucose production is not contingent on high catecholamines in fetal sheep with IUGR

Melissa A. Davis et al.

Summary: In this study, fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) were found to have higher concentrations of catecholamines, but their glucose metabolism adaptation was independent of catecholamines and appeared to be driven by hypoxemia and hypoglycemia.

Uteroplacental nutrient flux and evidence for metabolic reprogramming during sustained hypoxemia

Amanda K. Jones et al.

Summary: The study found that under gestational hypoxemia in pregnant sheep, the uteroplacental and fetal oxygen utilization rates, as well as the net glucose and lactate uptake rates, were similar. Hypoxemic fetuses had increased lactate and pyruvate concentrations, and decreased alanine flux to the fetus. This suggests a mechanism where uteroplacental tissues produce lactate as fuel for the fetus during sustained hypoxemia.
