Danish premature birth rates during the COVID-19 lockdown

Gitte Hedermann et al.

Summary: A nationwide study in Denmark examined the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on premature birth rates and found a significantly lower rate of extremely premature births during the lockdown period. There was no significant difference in other gestational age categories. The reasons for this decrease are still unclear, but the lockdown period offers a unique opportunity to investigate factors related to prematurity.

A comparison of COVID-19 epidemiological indicators in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland

Erica A. Yarmol-Matusiak et al.

Summary: Compared to other Nordic countries, Sweden had higher incidence and death rates from COVID-19, as well as higher mortality rates in seniors' care homes. The country also faced challenges with contact tracing and testing strategies, likely due to looser government restrictions at the beginning of the outbreak. Sweden has since increased testing rates, implemented more preventive measures, and expanded intensive care unit bed capacity to improve epidemic control.

Global changes in maternity care provision during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Rosemary Townsend et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decrease in antenatal clinic visits and unscheduled care visits per week, with an increase in virtual antenatal care and hospitalization of unscheduled attendees. The use of general anesthesia for category 1 Caesarean sections decreased, and there was no significant change in intrapartum epidural use or general anesthesia for elective CS. The global impact of reduced maternity healthcare-seeking and provision during the pandemic may contribute to worsening pregnancy outcomes.
