A 500-year tale of co-evolution, adaptation, and virulence:Helicobacter pyloriin the Americas

Zilia Y. Munoz-Ramirez et al.

Summary: Helicobacter pylori is a common component of the human stomach microbiota, with evidence of frequent admixture in American strains leading to the development of novel American H. pylori subpopulations. Virulence genes in America show the strongest fixation, with unique evolutionary paths contributing to the high risk of gastric cancer in the region.

Shedding Light on the African Enigma: In Vitro Testing of Homo sapiens-Helicobacter pylori Coevolution

Bruno Cavadas et al.

Summary: The continuous characterization of genome-wide diversity in population and case-cohort samples, allied to the development of new algorithms, are shedding light on host ancestry impact and selection events on various infectious diseases. Especially interesting are the long-standing associations between humans and certain bacteria, such as the case of Helicobacter pylori, which could have been strong drivers of adaptation leading to coevolution. The results showed that African human ancestry showed signs of coevolution with H. pylori while European ancestry appeared to be maladapted.

Cost-effectiveness of prevention and early detection of gastric cancer in Western countries

Iris Lansdorp-Vogelaar et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a significant global health problem, with Helicobacter pylori infection being a major factor. The balance between benefits, harms, and costs of screening is less clear-cut in Western countries. While there is a well-characterized precancerous process, rigorous data on interventions are lacking in Western countries.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Comparative Effectiveness of Multiple Different First-Line Treatment Regimens for Helicobacter pylori Infection: A Network Meta-analysis

Theodore Rokkas et al.

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness of different first-line regimens for Helicobacter pylori infection through a network meta-analysis. Results showed that vonoprazan triple therapy and reverse hybrid therapy achieved high eradication rates above 90%, with levofloxacin triple therapy performing best in Western countries. Standard triple therapy was found to be the least efficacious in this analysis.

Can Celiac Disease Be Prevented?

Renata Auricchio et al.

Summary: Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, with prevention strategies focusing on identifying at-risk individuals and eliminating risk factors. Research has shown that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of the disease, suggesting that future interventions could involve protection from infections, manipulation of microbiota, and modulation of T cells.

Helicobacter pylori infection causes both protective and deleterious effects in human health and disease

Anna K. Miller et al.

Summary: Infection with H. pylori is necessary but not sufficient for the development of gastric cancer, affecting over half of people globally non-uniformly, with infection rates declining in developed countries but plateauing in developing countries where gastric cancer is most prevalent. H. pylori, an ancient bacterium, has effects throughout an individual's life, depending on human and bacterial genetics that co-evolved over millennia. Universal eradication of H. pylori in its host may cause more harm than good for those infected.
