Discriminating Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Requiring Treatment from Common Febrile Conditions in Outpatient Settings

Rebecca F. Carlin et al.

Summary: This study compared patients with MIS-C and other febrile outpatients, finding distinct clinical features in MIS-C patients, such as higher fever, abdominal pain, neck pain, conjunctivitis, and different laboratory values, demonstrating the importance of recognizing these differences for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children: An International Survey

Carles Bautista-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: An international survey on children diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 showed a wide clinical spectrum, including Kawasaki disease-like cases, life-threatening shock, and milder cases with mainly fever and inflammation. A shorter duration of symptoms before admission was associated with a worse outcome.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome of Children: Subphenotypes, Risk Factors, Biomarkers, Cytokine Profiles, and Viral Sequencing

Roberta L. DeBiasi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated demographic, clinical, and biomarker features of patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), compared MIS-C sub-phenotypes, identified cytokine biosignatures, and characterized viral genome sequences. The results showed that Black and Latino children were over-represented in the MIS-C cohort, with Black children at greatest risk; cardiac complications were more frequent in critically ill patients with MIS-C.

Trends in Geographic and Temporal Distribution of US Children With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Ermias D. Belay et al.

Summary: This study conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a large cohort of patients with MIS-C in the United States, identifying 2 peaks that followed COVID-19 peaks by 2 to 5 weeks. The geographic and temporal association of MIS-C with the COVID-19 pandemic suggested that MIS-C resulted from delayed immunologic responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Clinical manifestations varied by age and presence or absence of preceding COVID-19.

Children's Hospital Ambulatory Response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic

Ashraf S. Harahsheh et al.

Summary: Children's National Hospital responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a coordinated ambulatory response, expanding telemedicine, and introducing operational innovations to ensure patient access. Despite a decrease in in-person ambulatory visits, telemedicine visits saw a significant increase, highlighting the need for further studies to assess the impact of healthcare delivery and operational innovations prompted by the crisis.
