Effect of traditional Chinese medicine on gut microbiota in adults with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yujiao Zheng et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the significant role of gut microbiota in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the potential therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on T2DM. This systematic review included five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on TCM interventions targeting gut microbiota in T2DM patients, showing statistically significant improvements in HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, insulin resistance, and beta-cell function. While TCM was found to modulate gut microbiota and improve glucose metabolism, further studies are needed to explore its effects on inflammation.

Associations Between Using Chinese Herbal Medicine and Long-Term Outcome Among Pre-dialysis Diabetic Nephropathy Patients: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study

Jenny Chun-Ling Guo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term outcome of using Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) among pre-dialysis diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients, and found that CHM use was associated with lower all-cause mortality and ESRD risk. Core CHMs, such as Ji-Sheng-Shen-Qi-Wan and Astragalus mongholicus Bunge, were also identified as beneficial for different CHM indications. Further clinical trials are needed to validate the beneficial effects of CHM in this patient population.

PRAgmatic Clinical Trial Design of Integrative MediCinE (PRACTICE): A Focus Group Series and Systematic Review on Trials of Diabetes and Kidney Disease

Kam Wa Chan et al.

Summary: The study found discrepancies between existing pragmatic trial designs in integrative medicine and patient expectations, with a lack of detailed assessment of concomitant drug changes and adverse events. Most study designs did not reflect the real-world practices of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine, and increasing pragmatism did not result in a higher risk of bias.

Efficacy and safety of Si-Jun-Zi-Tang-based therapies for functional (non-ulcer) dyspepsia: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yaping Wang et al.

Summary: SJZT-based therapies may be effective in treating functional dyspepsia (FD) with no serious side effects identified, but the efficacy seems limited to modified SJZT. The results should be interpreted with caution due to high risk of bias in included studies, and further standardized, large-scale and strictly designed RCTs are needed to validate the benefits of SJZT-based therapies for FD management.
