From Reciprocity to Autonomy in Physician-Assisted Death: An Ethical Analysis of the Dutch Supreme Court Ruling in the Albert Heringa Case

Summary: In 2002, the Dutch Euthanasia Act was introduced to allow physicians to assist in the death of patients whose suffering was deemed unbearable. However, there is currently a debate in the Netherlands about whether healthy older individuals should also be allowed to make autonomous decisions about their own euthanasia. The Dutch Supreme Court recently ruled in the Albert Heringa case that the existing law does not adequately consider a patient's autonomous decision making.

Euthanasia in adults with psychiatric conditions: A descriptive study of the experiences of Belgian psychiatrists

Summary: The study reveals that completing euthanasia assessment procedures for adults with psychiatric conditions is a lengthy and complex process, with an average duration of 14 months. Existential suffering is the main reason for the request, and psychiatrists find assessing self-contemplation care criteria easier than assessing other legal standards. In some cases where euthanasia was performed, not all legal criteria were met.
