HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: scaling up for impact now and in the future

Benjamin R. Bavinton et al.

Summary: More than a decade after the first efficacy evidence for oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was reported, global uptake of PrEP has been inadequate, with a need for more ambitious global targets and addressing individual-level barriers. New PrEP modalities are emerging and a greater understanding of long-term patterns of PrEP use in different populations is needed.

A Review of Cultural Influences on Risk for HIV and Culturally-Responsive Risk Mitigation Strategies Among African Immigrants in the US

Gloria Aidoo-Frimpong et al.

Summary: Research on HIV risk factors and risk reduction among African immigrants in the US is lacking, despite the growing literature on HIV prevention and treatment. Cultural factors and lack of engagement in HIV prevention services were identified as key contributors to the high incidence of HIV among African immigrants. Targeted interventions such as bundled HIV testing, flexible scheduling, and involving community leaders in intervention planning and implementation are recommended to overcome barriers to engagement in HIV prevention.

Risk compensation in HIV PrEP adherence among Black men who have sex with men in HPTN 073 study

Darren L. Whitfield et al.

Summary: This secondary analysis aimed to examine risk perception and PrEP adherence among Black MSM from HPTN 073. The study found no significant association between risk perception and PrEP adherence, suggesting no risk compensation among PrEP users. Further research is needed to investigate long-term adherence to PrEP among Black MSM.

How current and potential pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users experience, negotiate and manage stigma: disclosures and backstage processes in online discourse

Ashley M. Hedrick et al.

Summary: The study expanded the focus on stigma as a barrier to PrEP uptake by examining how current and potential users discuss their experiences of stigmatization and strategies for coping with and challenging stigma. The findings identified stigmatizing labels and perceptions seen in other research, as well as the active seeking and sharing of coping strategies and calls for advocacy. This discussion emphasizes how these strategies can inform efforts to reduce stigma and increase PrEP uptake in the future.
