Electrically driven SiC-based structured catalysts for intensified reforming processes

Simona Renda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrification of reforming processes by using commercial silicon carbide (SiC) heating elements as catalyst carriers to provide heat directly for the reaction. The experiments demonstrated the possibility of realizing a process by reversing the flow of heat, achieving higher methane conversion rates in both steam and dry reforming reactions.

Fabrication of dense SiSiC ceramics by a hybrid additive manufacturing process

Marco Pelanconi et al.

Summary: This study reported the fabrication of Silicon infiltrated Silicon Carbide (SiSiC) components using a hybrid additive manufacturing process, combining 3D printing of polymeric preforms with controlled relative density and preceramic polymer infiltration followed by pyrolysis. The final densification was achieved via liquid silicon infiltration, resulting in a nearly fully dense material of beta-SiC and Si in specific volume fractions. This approach eliminates the need for adding ceramic powder to the infiltrating solution, offering an alternative AM method for producing SiSiC ceramics.

Electrified methane reforming: Elucidating transient phenomena

Sebastian T. Wismann et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the rapid start-up from an idle state to operation conditions using electrically heated steam methane reforming technology, with no apparent delay between temperature change and methane conversion in cyclic operation. The highest thermal gradient is predicted in the washcoat at steady state operation, without an increase during start-up.

A compact catalytic foam reactor for decomposition of ammonia by the Joule-heating mechanism

Arash Badakhsh et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method of direct Joule-heating of the NiCrAl foam catalyst support to minimize heat transfer scale, achieving higher reactor volume efficiency and power density than previously reported reformers. Through experimentation, higher power density and reforming efficiency were achieved compared to previous reports. The proposed reactor concept shows great potential for applications such as H-2 fueled islanded networks and decarbonized energy conversion.

Efficient sulfur resistance of Fe, La and Ce doped hierarchically structured catalysts for low-temperature methanation integrated with electric internal heating

Liguang Dou et al.

Summary: Introducing dopants such as La and Fe on nickel-supported catalysts can enhance the metal-support interaction, improve the reducibility of active metallic Ni, and thus enhance the conversion efficiency of CO2 methanation reactions. Additionally, the addition of La can lower the energy barrier for CO2 adsorption and inhibit the adsorption of gaseous H2S on the catalyst surface.

Merve Ozturk et al.

Summary: This review discusses the power-to-gas concept, focusing on hydrogen, and compares different hydrogen production methods in terms of environmental impact, cost, and efficiency. The study finds that polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser has lower environmental effects, while geothermal energy-based system has the lowest levelized cost of electricity during hydrogen production.

How green is blue hydrogen?

Robert W. Howarth et al.

Summary: Despite the lower carbon dioxide emissions, the greenhouse gas emissions from the production of blue hydrogen are still quite high due to the release of fugitive methane. The use of blue hydrogen appears challenging to justify on climate grounds, as even with reduced methane emission rates, the emissions are still greater than simply burning natural gas.
