Single-Atom Catalysts as Promising Cathode Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Eleftherios Andritsos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrocatalytic properties of single-atom catalyst (SAC) materials as cathode hosts for Li-S batteries, showing that V- and W-based SACs provide strong LiPS binding and significantly improved reaction kinetics, potentially enhancing the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries.

Modeling and Simulations of the Sulfur Infiltration in Activated Carbon Fabrics during Composite Cathode Fabrication for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Kyriakos Lasetta et al.

Summary: This study presents a model for the sulfur infiltration during the manufacture of composite cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries, predicting a composite cathode with 41 wt% sulfur in agreement with experimental results. The pore size distribution of the porous carbon host is critical for the retention of sulfur, with pores below 0.4 nm unable to accommodate sulfur and different allotropes retained in pores of varying sizes.

Design of Porous Carbons for Supercapacitor Applications for Different Organic Solvent-Electrolytes

Summary: This study investigates the optimization of pore size distribution of porous electrodes for different electrolytes through a volume-averaged continuum model of ion transport. The research concludes that a large specific area in terms of micropores larger than the largest desolvated ion is essential for achieving high specific capacity, along with a good proportion of mesopores for fast ion transport and accessibility of the micropores.

Summary: Lithium sulfur (Li-S) chemistry is a commercially mature technology with significant improvements in energy density and reduced costs, but challenges remain in improving rate performance and longevity. The UK's Faraday Institution has launched the LiSTAR program to address these issues and support the broader Li-S research community, providing guidance for academia, industry, government, and funding agencies.
