Environmental soil quality and vegetable safety under current greenhouse vegetable production management in China

Yusef Kianpoor Kalkhajeh et al.

Summary: Rapid expansion of greenhouse vegetable production in China has boosted vegetable output and farmers' incomes but poses threats to human health through soil contaminants. Legacy agricultural practices have led to soil acidification, salinization, and accumulation of nutrients and emerging contaminants. Future research should focus on investigating the sources and pathways of contaminants entering the soils and vegetables, and implementing new cleaning technologies to mitigate contamination.

Effects of biochar on heavy metal bioavailability and uptake by tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) in two soils

Jiuquan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that in acidic soil, the available Cd content increased with higher biochar application rates; while in neutral soil, significant increase in Cd content was only observed at the highest biochar application rate of 40 Mg ha-1. Biochar application reduced the available Cu, Ni, and Pb contents in soil, and caution should be taken regarding heavy metal contamination from biochar feedstock.

Productivity and heavy metal pollution management in a silage maize field with reduced recycled wastewater applications with different irrigation methods

Talip Cakmakci et al.

Summary: The study found that drip irrigation methods significantly reduced salinity and heavy metal contents in the soil, while deficit irrigation decreased heavy metal accumulations. The subsurface drip method showed significant water-saving effects, increased soil productivity, and reduced metal pollution and salinity.

Intercropping improves heavy metal phytoremediation efficiency through changing properties of rhizosphere soil in bamboo plantation

Fangyuan Bian et al.

Summary: The intercropping of Moso bamboo and Sedum plumbizincicola can increase the removal efficiency of heavy metals from polluted soils, reduce the content of organic matter, available nutrients, and heavy metals in the soil, and increase bacterial diversity.
