Nitrogen levels regulate intercropping-related mitigation of potential nitrate leaching

Guangqiang Long et al.

Summary: Intercropping can reduce the potential nitrate leaching by 3.4-37.4%, with a mean reduction of 15.8% compared to monocropping. The mitigation of nitrate leaching under intercropping is enhanced with higher nitrogen levels. Soil water plays a crucial role in regulating the mitigation of potential nitrate leaching under intercropping, while improved nitrogen uptake by intercropped maize helps reduce nitrate leaching at low and medium nitrogen levels.

Assessing the vulnerability and risk of maize to drought in China based on the AquaCrop model

Xiufang Zhu et al.

Summary: In the study of maize vulnerability to drought in different regions of China, it was found that drought had varying impacts on maize yield depending on the growth stage, with the Northwest Irrigated Maize Region having the highest drought risk among the regions analyzed.

Irrigation amount dominates soil mineral nitrogen leaching in plastic shed vegetable production systems

Haofeng Lv et al.

Summary: Excessive irrigation rather than nitrogen input was found to be the main cause of significant nitrogen leaching in plastic shed vegetable production. Drip fertilization significantly reduced nitrogen leaching without compromising yield, while straw addition also contributed to reducing nitrogen leaching. Optimal irrigation schemes, combined with precise drip fertilization and straw addition, are recommended for sustainable and environmentally-friendly plastic shed vegetable production.

Soil water balance dynamics under plastic mulching in dryland rainfed agroecosystem across the Loess Plateau

Ai-Tian Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that plastic mulching significantly increased evapotranspiration and improved soil water storage, especially with more pronounced effects on deep soil water storage and better performance in conditions of lower precipitation.
