Winter wheat root distribution with irrigation, planting methods, and nitrogen application

Fatemeh Mehrabi et al.

Summary: Soil water uptake is influenced by root growth and distribution. Limitations on root growth may decrease water and nutrient uptake, leading to slower plant growth. Different irrigation strategies, nitrogen application rates, and planting methods were found to have varying effects on winter wheat root growth. In-furrow planting and partial root-zone irrigation reduced root density compared to on-ridge planting and full irrigation, while nitrogen application increased root density. Higher root traits enhanced grain yield initially, but excessive values had a negative impact on yield.

Can smart nutrient applications optimize the plant's hidden half to improve drought resistance?

Kirti Bardhan et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of optimizing crop root traits to increase drought resistance through smart nutrient application, proposing four primary mechanisms. By examining the effects of different water or nutrient levels on root plasticity and its genetic regulation, we aim to find ways to enhance drought resistance in crops.

Wheat cultivars with small root length density in the topsoil increased post-anthesis water use and grain yield in the semi-arid region on the Loess Plateau

Yan Fang et al.

Summary: The extensive distribution of roots in the topsoil may benefit vegetative growth but may not be advantageous under soil water deficit conditions. Modern wheat cultivars with smaller root systems in the topsoil show higher yields and nitrogen accumulation compared to older landraces with larger roots.

Root economics spectrum and construction costs in Mediterranean woody plants: The role of symbiotic associations and the environment

Enrique G. de la Riva et al.

Summary: The study quantified the construction costs (CC) of fine roots in 60 Mediterranean woody species and found a positive relationship between root CC and the root economics spectrum (RES). Different symbiotic types influenced the specific CC components differently, and root CC were affected by soil resource availability. This highlights the importance of understanding root construction costs for below-ground resource-use strategies.
