Increasing climate sensitivity of subtropical conifers along an aridity gradient

Jiajia Su et al.

Summary: Subtropical forests play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle and biodiversity, but may face challenges in composition and structure due to increasing drought. Research suggests that the impact of drought on subtropical forests may be more complex than previously thought, with drought intensity during dry season being a key factor in their sensitivity. Climate change-induced increases in drought frequency and intensity could pose a larger-than-expected threat to the growth and survival of these forests.

Recent European drought extremes beyond Common Era background variability

Ulf Buentgen et al.

Summary: The study shows that the recent summer droughts in Europe since 2015 are unprecedented in the past 2,110 years, likely caused by anthropogenic warming and associated changes in the position of the summer jet stream.

Skilful predictions of the Asian summer monsoon one year ahead

Yuhei Takaya et al.

Summary: The interannual variability of the Asian summer monsoon has significant impacts on Asian society. Advances in climate modelling have enabled useful predictions of the seasonal Asian summer monsoon up to approximately half a year ahead, but long-range predictions remain challenging. Using a large ensemble hindcast experiment, researchers demonstrate that a state-of-the-art climate model can predict the Asian summer monsoon and associated tropical cyclone activity more than one year ahead by successfully simulating El Nino-Southern Oscillation evolution and realistically representing subsequent atmosphere-ocean responses in the Indian Ocean-western North Pacific.

Orographic evolution of northern Tibet shaped vegetation and plant diversity in eastern Asia

Shu-Feng Li et al.

Summary: The growth of the Tibetan Plateau has influenced vegetation and plant diversity in eastern Asia by altering the monsoon system, leading to a transition from deciduous to evergreen broadleaf vegetation and an increase in plant diversity in southeastern Asia. Further quantifying Tibetan orographic change is crucial for understanding the evolution of Asian vegetation and plant diversity.
