Lithium-ion battery explosion aerosols: Morphology and elemental composition

Teresa L. Barone et al.

Summary: This study characterized the aerosols emitted by explosions of lithium-ion batteries and found that different types of batteries released aerosols with varying compositions and morphologies. The research highlights the importance of selecting low-toxicity battery materials in the event of battery thermal runaway to minimize potential exposures.

Analysis and Investigation of Thermal Runaway Propagation for a Mechanically Constrained Lithium-Ion Pouch Cell Module

Luigi Aiello et al.

Summary: This paper presents tests and analysis of thermal runaway propagation for commercial modules consisting of four 41 Ah Li-ion pouch cells. The experiments revealed 8 distinct phases during the process, confirming that the violent exothermal reactions of thermal runaway are caused by internal separator failure. Postmortem inspections showed internal electrical failure path in one cell and propagation of internal short circuit in its active material volume, suggesting that the expansion of electrolyte plays a role in short circuit propagation at the single cell level.

Early Detection of Failing Automotive Batteries Using Gas Sensors

Christiane Essl et al.

Summary: The study investigated gases produced during battery failure, before and during thermal runaway, and tested different gas sensors as early detectors of battery incidents. Several commercially available gas sensors were tested in four battery failure cases, showing that gas sensors can detect battery failures depending on the specific case. The chosen gas sensor was able to detect hydrogen from unwanted electrolysis, electrolyte vapor, and gases released from state-of-the-art LIBs, contributing significantly to improving battery safety.

Detection of Li-ion battery failure and venting with Carbon Dioxide sensors

Ting Cai et al.

Summary: This study addresses the critical safety issue of Li-ion battery thermal runaway in Electric Vehicles and proposes a 5-minute advanced warning requirement prior to thermal runaway. By evaluating gas venting and selecting CO2 as the target gas species, along with using the NDIR CO2 sensor, sensitive detection of thermal runaway can be achieved.

Effects of the Nail Geometry and Humidity on the Nail Penetration of High-Energy Density Lithium Ion Batteries

Stefan Doose et al.

Summary: The study found that the geometry of the nail has no influence on the thermal runaway processes of high energy density lithium ion batteries within certain limits. However, a change in capacity from 5.3 to 3.3 Ah results in different gaseous reaction products, with an increase in water content in the surrounding atmosphere leading to a reduction in measurable gas concentrations.
