Visible Light-Driven Radical-Mediated C-C Bond Cleavage/Functionalization in Organic Synthesis

Xiao-Ye Yu et al.

Summary: In recent years, visible light photoredox-catalyzed radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage reactions have emerged as a powerful alternative method for overcoming the thermodynamic and kinetic barrier of C-C bond cleavage in diverse molecular scaffolds. These reactions provide an efficient way to construct structurally diverse molecular skeletons, contributing to the development in the field of synthetic organic chemistry.

Metal-Free Synthesis of Aryl Selenocyanates and Selenaheterocycles with Elemental Selenium

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a green method for synthesizing aryl selenocyanates under metal-free and additive-free conditions using arylboronic acids, Se powder, and trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) in a three-component reaction. Remarkably, TMSCN not only serves as a substrate but also as a catalyst, allowing access to various selenaheterocycles with a catalytic amount of TMSCN.

Summary: A visible-light-promoted synthesis of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones was developed using 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium perchlorate as an organo-photocatalyst, enabling selective synthesis of hydroxyl- and acyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in mild conditions without metal catalysts or toxic reagents. Fluorescent labelling experiment demonstrated potential biological applications of hydroxyl-containing quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones as potent fluorophores.

Visible-Light Mediated Diarylselenylative Cyclization of 1,6-Enynes

Hong Hou et al.

Summary: This study describes a selenylative cyclization reaction using diselenides as radical sources, with visible light irradiation generating selenium atom radical to trigger radical addition/cyclization/selenation sequences. Both terminal alkyne and internal alkyne derived 1,6-enynes were suitable for the synthetic protocol, leading to good yields of various selenium-containing cycles.

Dietary Habits, Selenium, Copper, Zinc and Total Antioxidant Status in Serum in Relation to Cognitive Functions of Patients with Alzheimer's Disease

Katarzyna Socha et al.

Summary: The study examined selenium, copper, zinc, and total antioxidant status (TAS) in the serum of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) compared to healthy individuals. Lower concentrations of selenium, zinc, and TAS, as well as a higher copper:zinc ratio, were observed in the serum of AD patients. Dietary habits were found to have a significant impact on the concentrations of these parameters in the serum of individuals with AD.

Aryldiazonium Salts in Photoredox Catalysis - Recent Trends

Sakamuri Sarath Babu et al.

Summary: Aryl diazonium salts are important organic compounds widely used as arylating agents in photoredox catalysis due to their low redox potential, broad substrate scope, and atom economy. They have been successfully used to introduce aryl groups in many organic transformations and serve as good alternatives for aryl halides and other aryl organometallic reagents. New reactions using aryl diazonium salts are continually emerging, with recent developments in photoredox arylations and their applications being highlighted in this review.

Synthesis of functionalised organochalcogenides and in vitro evaluation of their antioxidant activity

Antonella Capperucci et al.

Summary: The study found that some tellurium and selenium compounds exhibited low cytotoxicity on normal human dermal fibroblasts, with some even proving to be non-toxic and having no impact on cell viability. Additionally, the selected organotellurium compounds showed significant antioxidant potential, particularly under conditions of exogenously induced oxidative stress. Additionally, the replacement of selenium with tellurium in active tellurides resulted in a significant increase in peroxidase activity.

Chemopreventive and Anticancer Property of Selenoproteins in Obese Breast Cancer

Supriya Bevinakoppamath et al.

Summary: Obesity is a significant risk factor for various cancers, including breast cancer, due to the increased levels of inflammatory cytokines driving pro-proliferative pathways. The association of obesity with breast cancer is mainly attributed to elevated estrogen levels and oxidative stress caused by chronic low-grade inflammation.

Oxidase reactions in photoredox catalysis

Nicholas L. Reed et al.

Summary: The nature of the terminal oxidant in oxidation reactions plays a crucial role in determining the mechanism, efficiency, and practicality of a synthetic protocol. Photoredox catalysis has seen success in oxygenase-type reactions, while progress in photocatalytic oxidase reactions has been slower. This review highlights key classes of terminal oxidants used in photoredox oxidase transformations and their mechanistic features and benefits.
