Recent Progress of 3d Transition Metal Single-Atom Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Chaochen Xu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that single-atom catalysts exhibit superior catalytic activity and selectivity for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction compared to bulk metal and nanostructured counterparts. While Ni and Fe SACs show excellent performance for CO evolution, Co, Mn, and Zn SACs are less reported due to their inertness for the CRR, and Cu SACs have ordinary catalytic activity for the CRR with few reports of C2 products.

Catalyst Design for Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to Multicarbon Products

Yuanyuan Xue et al.

Summary: Electrochemical reduction of CO2 driven by renewable energy is an effective route towards carbon neutralization, but selective reduction to multicarbon products remains a challenge due to low selectivity, poor yield, and high overpotential. Adjusting catalyst structure and composition is crucial in improving the performance of CO2RR.

Graphene-coated nanoporous nickel towards a metal-catalyzed oxygen evolution reaction

Hua-Jun Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that passivation of Ni in its metallic state by atomically thin graphene in a three-dimensional nanoporous architecture can achieve high OER activity. The non-oxide transition metal catalyst exhibits low OER overpotential, high OER current density, and long cycling lifetime in alkaline solutions, showing potential for a wide range of applications in renewable energy.

Atomic Ni and Cu co-anchored 3D nanoporous graphene as an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst for zinc-air batteries

Yongtai Cheng et al.

Summary: The study introduces a 3D bicontinuous nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphene electrocatalyst ((Ni,Cu)-NG) co-anchoring nickel and copper atoms at the single-atom level for high performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This catalyst exhibits exceptional ORR activity in alkaline electrolytes, enabling rechargeable zinc-air batteries with excellent energy efficiency, large power density, and high cycling stability. The research may provide an efficient approach for designing durable single-atom ORR catalysts for metal-air batteries.

Synthesis of graphene mesosponge via catalytic methane decomposition on magnesium oxide

Shogo Sunahiro et al.

Summary: Graphene mesosponge (GMS) is a novel mesoporous carbon material mainly composed of single-layer graphene, synthesized using magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalytic template for methane conversion. The activated MgO surface allows for relatively low activation energy in methane-to-graphene conversion, with the potential for easier production of single-layer graphene compared to traditional methods. The MgO-derived GMS possesses unique properties such as high surface area, developed mesopores, high oxidation resistance, softness, elasticity, and force-driven reversible liquid-gas phase transition, making it suitable for various applications including high-voltage supercapacitors and heat pumps.
