Strong coupling and pressure engineering in WSe2-MoSe2heterobilayers

Juan Xia et al.

Summary: This study achieves high-quality 2H-stacked WSe2-MoSe(2) heterostructures through a two-step chemical vapor deposition method, demonstrating effective tuning of interlayer interactions by hydrostatic pressure. The research reveals strong coupling nature and pressure-induced evolution of interlayer excitons, providing new opportunities for exploring and tuning van der Waals heterostructures with strong interlayer coupling.

Excitons in a reconstructed moire potential in twisted WSe2/WSe2 homobilayers

Trond Andersen et al.

Summary: Recent advancements have allowed for direct imaging of stacking domains in van der Waals heterostructures, enabling a better understanding of the correlation between moire structures and electronic/optical properties. Through this technique, researchers were able to investigate reconstructed moire patterns in twisted WSe2/WSe2 bilayers and identify the emergence of distinct exciton species in photoluminescence measurements, with the ability to tune these states individually through electrostatic gating.

Stripe phases in WSe2/WS2 moire superlattices

Chenhao Jin et al.

Summary: Stripe phases were identified in WSe2/WS2 moire superlattices using optical anisotropy and electronic compressibility measurements, with a distinctive 1/2 state assigned to an insulating stripe crystal phase. The study demonstrates that two-dimensional semiconductor moire superlattices are a versatile platform for studying stripe phases and their interactions with other symmetry breaking ground states.

Evidence of ideal excitonic insulator in bulk MoS2 under pressure

S. Samaneh Ataei et al.

Summary: The spontaneous condensation of excitons, similar to Cooper pairs in superconductors, can potentially lead to a new phase called an excitonic insulator (EI) in semiconductors. At high pressure, bulk MoS2 is shown to be prone to condensation of genuine excitons with finite momentum, while the phonon dispersion remains regular. The EI phase sustains an out-of-plane permanent electric dipole moment with an antiferroelectric texture in the layer plane, providing a unique Raman fingerprint for its formation. Direct spectroscopic confirmation of an ideal excitonic insulator phase in bulk MoS2 above 30 GPa has been achieved through Raman features observed experimentally.

Electrical tuning of optically active interlayer excitons in bilayer MoS2

Namphung Peimyoo et al.

Summary: Interlayer excitons in bilayer MoS2 can be electrically controlled at room temperature, offering new opportunities for excitonic devices. The large oscillator strength of the IL excitonic states is preserved as their energies are manipulated by the electric field, indicating potential for practical applications.
