Emergent interface vibrational structure of oxide superlattices

Eric R. Hoglund et al.

Summary: As the size of materials decreases, the heterogeneities at interfaces become as significant as the surrounding materials. This study demonstrates the localized vibrational response of interfaces in strontium titanate-calcium titanate superlattices. The local structure at the interfaces creates phonon modes that determine the overall vibrational response of the superlattice when the spacing of the interfaces approaches the spatial extent of phonons.

Single-defect phonons imaged by electron microscopy

Xingxu Yan et al.

Summary: The study shows that space- and angle-resolved vibrational spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope can map the vibrational spectra of individual crystal defects, revealing changes in energy and intensity of acoustic vibration modes restricted to a few nanometers around the defect. The capabilities of a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope open the door to directly mapping phonon propagation around defects, offering valuable guidance for engineering the thermal properties of materials.

Cobalt-based magnetic Weyl semimetals with high-thermodynamic stabilities

Wei Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural stabilities and topological electronic properties of cobalt-based shandite and alloys were explored using first-principles calculations and a global optimization approach, identifying stable structures with different Weyl phases. The physical mechanism of the origination of Weyl fermions in Co-based shandite structures was revealed for the first time, along with the proposal of topological quantum states with high thermal stability. The Co3SnPbS2 alloy exhibited two distinct topological phases, showing a three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall metal and a MWSM phase with anomalous Hall conductivity larger than that of Co2Sn2S2.

Thickness and Spin Dependence of Raman Modes in Magnetic Layered Fe3GeTe2

Xiangru Kong et al.

Summary: In this study, phonon vibrations and Raman intensities of 2D layered Fe3GeTe2 were systematically investigated from bulk to monolayer structures through first-principles density functional theory calculations. It was found that the frequencies of Raman modes in Fe3GeTe2 depend significantly on the layer number and spin ordering, demonstrating notable spin-phonon interactions in the material. The results also suggest that Raman modes can be used to characterize sample thickness and interlayer spin ordering in this 2D magnet.

Resonant Coupling of a Moire Exciton to a Phonon in a WSe2/MoSe2 Heterobilayer

Keisuke Shinokita et al.

Summary: The moire patterns in van der Waals heterostructures can be used to engineer optically generated excitonic properties, offering the possibility for coherent quantum emitters and quantum simulation. The interaction between moire excitons and phonons can be tuned by adjusting the excitation energy, leading to selective excitation at phonon resonances and relaxation between different potential minima. Neel-type skyrmions and their current-induced motion in van derWaals ferromagnet-based heterostructures

Tae-Eon Park et al.

Summary: We report the experimental observation of Neel-type chiral magnetic skyrmions and their lattice (SkX) formation in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT). By using first principle calculations supported by experiments, we discover the origin of DMI being the interfaces with oxides, which then allows us to engineer vdW heterostructures for desired chiral states. Our finding opens the door to topological spin textures in the 2D vdW magnet and their potential device application.
