Nanoceria provides antioxidant and osteogenic properties to mesoporous silica nanoparticles for osteoporosis treatment

Alessandra Pinna et al.

Summary: Ce@MSNs, as ROS-scavenger nanoceria, showed potential in treating osteoporosis by inducing mineralisation in pre-osteoblasts and exhibiting antioxidant capability without altering cell viability significantly. The nanoparticles also stimulated cell proliferation and osteogenic responses, indicating their potential for treating diseases caused by oxidative stress.

A versatile nanocomposite based on nanoceria for antibacterial enhancement and protection from aPDT-aggravated inflammation via modulation of macrophage polarization

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite nanomaterial was designed to achieve simultaneous sterilization and inflammation elimination by combining a photosensitizer and ROS scavenger. This nano-based platform can modulate host immunity by down-regulating pro-inflammatory macrophages and up-regulating anti-inflammatory and regenerative macrophages. Additionally, the local ROS level induced by activated inflammation pathway can be adjusted in a very long time due to the charge conversion effect of CeO2, improving the regenerative potential of inflammatory surrounding tissues in the animal model.

Induction of Four-Dimensional Spatiotemporal Geometric Transformations in High Cell Density Tissues via Shape-Changing Hydrogels

Yu Bin Lee et al.

Summary: This study describes the development of 4D high cell density tissues based on shape-changing hydrogels. By photocrosslinking of oxidized and methacrylated alginate (OMA) and methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), bilayered hydrogels presenting controllable geometric changes are fabricated. The bioprinting of high density cell-laden OMA and GelMA permits the formation of more complex constructs with defined 4D geometric changes, showing promise for regenerative medicine applications.

Location, location, location: how the tissue microenvironment affects inflammation in RA

Christopher D. Buckley et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role of synovial extracellular matrix in rheumatoid arthritis and how better understanding of it can improve disease diagnosis and new therapies. Current treatments for rheumatoid arthritis are not effective for many patients and cannot cure or prevent the disease. Lack of complete understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammatory joint disease is a major obstacle to developing better drugs.

Chondrocyte ferroptosis contribute to the progression of osteoarthritis

Xudong Yao et al.

Summary: The study found that chondrocytes may undergo ferroptosis under inflammation and iron overload conditions, leading to increased MMP13 expression and decreased collagen II expression. Inhibiting ferroptosis, such as by intraarticular injection of Ferrostatin-1, seems to be a novel strategy for preventing osteoarthritis.

Overview of methods for enhancing bone regeneration in distraction osteogenesis: Potential roles of biometals

Ye Li et al.

Summary: Various approaches have been explored to reduce the treatment duration of distraction osteogenesis (DO) with some success, but no widely accepted approach currently exists. Biometals, particularly magnesium (Mg) and its alloy, have shown promise in promoting bone formation in DO. The translational potential of utilizing Mg-based devices to accelerate DO is promising, as Mg stimulates expression of intrinsic biological factors and can aid in bone formation and consolidation.

Mn-containing bioceramics inhibit osteoclastogenesis and promote osteoporotic bone regeneration via scavenging ROS

Jianmei Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Mn-containing bioceramics can scavenge ROS, inhibit osteoclastogenesis, promote osteoblast differentiation, and accelerate bone regeneration under osteoporotic conditions. The Mn-TCP bioceramics have the potential to be an ideal biomaterial for treating osteoporotic bone defects.

Inflammatory microenvironment-targeted nanotherapies

Guangshuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Inflammatory microenvironments (IMEs) are common pathological characteristics in chronic diseases and targeted nanotherapies show potential for treating inflammatory conditions. Nanoplatforms play a significant role in improving anti-inflammatory treatments, with enhanced therapeutic effects and reduced side effects drawing interest from research community in IME-targeted therapies. Developing rational targeting strategies for IMEs in damaged tissues can help advance therapies for chronic diseases.
