Unraveling the Structure and Function of Melanin through Synthesis

Summary: Melanin is a natural biomaterial with various functions found in living organisms, classified into different types based on chemical precursors. Despite its complexity and diversity in chemical structure, synthetic mimics have been used to study its structure-function relationships. Efforts are being made to elucidate biosynthetic pathways and characterize melanin materials for potential new opportunities in synthetic materials.

A Yarrowia lipolytica Strain Engineered for Pyomelanin Production

Summary: In this study, the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica was engineered to overproduce pyomelanin by optimizing a chassis strain to increase homogentisic acid synthesis. The overexpression of the 4HPPD gene led to significantly higher pyomelanin yields, with the pathway being strongly induced by phenylalanine supplementation.
