Engineering the Local Coordination Environment of Single-Atom Catalysts and Their Applications in Photocatalytic Water Splitting: A Review

Hongli Sun et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts, with atomically dispersed metal atoms anchored on a support, offer high utilization efficiency and electronic properties dependent on the coordination environment. Engineering the coordination environment allows for designing efficient SACs with optimized electronic structure. Further development can be made by exploring different types of coordination elements for coordination engineering of SACs.

Tailoring Acidic Oxygen Reduction Selectivity on Single-Atom Catalysts via Modification of First and Second Coordination Spheres

Cheng Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the molecular-level local structure, including first and second coordination spheres, plays a critical role in determining the selectivity of catalytic reactions. By modifying the first and second coordination spheres of Co-SACs, it is possible to tailor the oxygen reduction reaction selectivity. The unique selectivity change originates from the structure-dependent shift of active sites, leading to improved activity and selectivity for acidic H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Single-Atom High-Valent Fe(IV) for Promoted Photocatalytic Nitrogen Hydrogenation on Porous TiO2-SiO2

Shiqun Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation on single-atom Fe-modified TiO2-SiO2 material, achieving a high ammonia generation rate without sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. The formation of a photoinduced hole-trapping polaron on the Fe dopant leading to the high-valent Fe(IV) species is confirmed, which plays a crucial role in water oxidation and promoting N-2 hydrogenation. This research provides insights into the coupling mechanism between photocatalytic N-2 hydrogenation and water oxidation through a doping strategy, guiding the rational design of photocatalysts for ammonia synthesis.

Improving the Stability of Non-Noble-Metal M-N-C Catalysts for Proton-Exchange-Membrane Fuel Cells through M-N Bond Length and Coordination Regulation

Zhengpei Miao et al.

Summary: An effective strategy is developed to enhance the stability of non-noble-metal catalysts in fuel cells by improving the bonding strength between metal ions and chelating polymers. The optimized catalyst exhibits outstanding activity and stability in both half-cell and fuel cell cathodes, with near 100% retention of current density for an extended period. The study suggests that the Fe-N-4/C site can strongly stabilize Fe centers against demetalation, providing insights for further catalyst design.

Calvin Ku et al.

Summary: In this study, oxidation-state constrained density functional theory (OS-CDFT) was used to calculate the optical band gaps of transition metal oxides and dopant state energies in doped anatase. This approach allows for the control of electron transfer and the identification of the transition responsible for the reduced band gap in doped systems.

General synthesis of single-atom catalysts with high metal loading using graphene quantum dots

Chuan Xia et al.

Summary: A general method was reported for synthesizing single-atom catalysts with high transition-metal-atom loadings, showing significant improvements compared to benchmarks in the literature. The use of graphene quantum dots interwoven into a carbon matrix provided anchoring sites for high densities of transition-metal atoms without aggregation. An increase in activity was demonstrated in electrochemical CO2 reduction on a Ni single-atom catalyst with increased Ni loading.
