Reduced thermal conductivity of supported and encased monolayer and bilayer MoS2

Alexander J. Gabourie et al.

Summary: The thermal conductivity of monolayer MoS(2) significantly decreases when supported by SiO2 or encased in SiO(2), while that of bilayer MoS(2) is less affected. These effects are attributed to phonon scattering with remote vibrational modes of the substrate, which are partly screened in bilayer MoS2. This study also reveals that the substrate reduces the dependence of thermal conductivity on temperature and defect densities in monolayer MoS(2).

Ultrahigh stiffness and anisotropic Dirac cones in BeN4 and MgN4 monolayers: a first-principles study

B. Mortazavi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that beryllium polynitride (BeN4) and magnesium polynitride (MgN4) monolayers exhibit anisotropic Dirac cones in their electronic structure, while platinum polynitride (PtN4) monolayer is predicted to be a narrow bandgap semiconductor, and iridium polynitride (IrN4) and rhodium polynitride (RhN4) monolayers are metallic systems.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Two-Dimensional MoO3

Zhen Tong et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations and theoretical framework, it was found that monolayer molybdenum trioxide has record low thermal conductivity due to soft flexural and in-plane acoustic modes combined with strong bonding anharmonicity. These insights can guide the search for 2D materials with low thermal conductivity and motivate measurements for potential applications in thermoelectricity and thermal protection.

Summary: High-pressure chemistry has led to the synthesis of a new class of 2D material, BeN4, consisting of polyacetylene-like nitrogen chains and Be atoms in square-planar coordination. The BeN4 layer represents a qualitatively new class of materials that can host anisotropic Dirac fermions.

Summary: This study investigates the structural, dynamical, electronic, and optical properties of monolayer and few-layer BeN4 using first-principles calculations. The results show that monolayer BeN4 is a semi-metal, with electronic properties changing as the layer number increases. Bilayer structures absorb UV and visible light better than monolayer structures.

Phononic Thermal Transport along Graphene Grain Boundaries: A Hidden Vulnerability

Zhen Tong et al.

Summary: The study finds that even ultra-narrow and aligned graphene grain boundaries (GBs) can significantly reduce the phononic thermal conductivity, due to the presence of linear GBs with pentagon-heptagon dislocations. The reduction in phononic thermal conductivity is attributed to the reflective nature of the periodic GB strain field, causing anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. The non-monotonic relationship with dislocation density of phononic thermal conductivity uncovered in this study can help in identifying GB structures that can maintain the integrity of phononic transport.

Indirect electron-phonon interaction leading to significant reduction of thermal conductivity in graphene

X. Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of electron-phonon interaction on the lattice thermal conductivity of graphene was investigated using first-principles calculations. It was found that the indirect coupling between flexural acoustic phonons and electrons has a significant impact on thermal conductivity in graphene, particularly due to the dominance of normal processes. Additionally, an unusual minimum thermal conductivity was observed at a specific charge carrier density in graphene.
