Observing sodiation process and achieving high efficiency of yolk-shell antimony@carbon rods

Xuming Yang et al.

Summary: A novel oxidation-coating-reduction strategy was developed to fabricate yolk-shell Sb@C rods, showing irregular expansion of Sb particles during sodiation with the deformability of the carbon shell providing additional ability to withstand volume expansion. The structural merits enable the material to deliver enhanced cycle performance, making it promising for practical applications.

Role of electrolyte in stabilizing hard carbon as an anode for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries with long cycle life

Hayley S. Hirsh et al.

Summary: Hard carbon is a promising anode material for grid-level sodium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity and low working potential, but issues such as low first cycle efficiency and poor rate performance need to be addressed. Studies have shown that the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed by ether-based electrolytes can significantly improve the performance of hard carbon anodes, highlighting a pathway to achieve long-life grid-level NIBs through interfacial engineering.

Efficient Stress Dissipation in Well-Aligned Pyramidal SbSn Alloy Nanoarrays for Robust Sodium Storage

Xinyan Li et al.

Summary: Alloy-type anode materials with well-aligned antimony tin (SbSn) alloy nanoarrays electrodeposited on copper (Cu) substrates were developed for sodium-ion batteries, improving the connection strength between the active alloy and the substrate. Density functional theory calculations showed energetically favorable sodium diffusion in the alloy, while the unique triangular pyramid-like nanostructure promoted efficient ion diffusion and stress distribution. These optimized composition and geometry led to enhanced high-rate performance and prolonged cycle life of the SbSn alloy nanoarrays.

An overview on Sb-based intermetallics and alloys for sodium-ion batteries: trends, challenges and future prospects from material synthesis to battery performance

Shreya Sarkar et al.

Summary: Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their cost-effectiveness and the abundant availability of sodium in the Earth's crust. Metal alloy based anode materials, particularly those containing antimony (Sb), are emerging as promising materials for SIBs thanks to their high theoretical capacity and judicious reaction potential. However, the development of SIBs is hindered by volume changes associated with the sodiation/desodiation reactions.
