3D printed polymer positive models for the investment casting of extremely thin-walled single crystals

Selina Koerber et al.

Summary: This research work aimed to adjust the conventional investment casting process for single crystal casting of thin-walled near net shape specimens. Polymer models manufactured by additive manufacturing were used for shell molds, with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) showing the best burnout behavior. The high-quality thin-walled single crystal Ni-based superalloy M247LC was successfully cast in shell molds made using PVB models.
