Advanced Flame-Retardant Methods for Polymeric Materials

Bo-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: Most organic polymeric materials are highly flammable, causing significant damages to human life and property through the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during burning. Conventional flame-retardant methods are facing difficulties in meeting the increasing flame-retardant requirements. Advanced flame-retardant methods, such as all-in-one intumescence and nanotechnology, have been developed to provide potential solutions to these challenges.

Mechanically Strong, Scalable, Mesoporous Xerogels of Nanocellulose Featuring Light Permeability, Thermal Insulation, and Flame Self-Extinction

Wataru Sakuma et al.

Summary: Scalability is a challenge in the drying of nanoscale particle dispersions for producing aerogels. Evaporative drying under ambient pressure is proposed as a solution, but challenges remain in producing xerogels with specific structural profiles like aerogels. This study demonstrates the production of mesoporous xerogels with high porosity and high specific surface area using cellulose nanofibers, showing outstanding strength and multifunctionality.

Chemical-physical and dynamical-mechanical characterization on Spartium junceum L. cellulosic fiber treated with softener agents: a preliminary investigation

Giuseppina Anna Corrente et al.

Summary: By chemically treating long cellulose fibers extracted from Spartium junceum with different softening agents, improvements in fiber softness and textile applicability were observed. The softeners increased the hydrophilicity and water wettability of the fibers, while also enhancing the inter-fiber frictional forces. Additionally, treated fibers exhibited more homogeneous thermal behavior and reduced fiber crystallinity compared to untreated fibers.

Jungang Jiang et al.

Summary: Lightweight and super-strong honeycomb structures are constructed using 3D printing of all-cellulose ink, demonstrating switchable high elasticity in the wet state and high rigidity in the dry state. The superb printing and mechanical properties are attributed to controlled dissolution and regeneration of cellulose, as well as shear-induced cellulose alignment during printing. Additionally, the all-cellulose honeycomb structure shows good thermal insulation properties after filling with cellulose nanofibrils aerogel.

Improving the Flame Retardancy of Bamboo Slices by Coating With Melamine-Phytate via Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Peng Lin et al.

Summary: Bamboo, a rich natural resource in the Asia Pacific, was treated with melamine and phytic acid using layer-by-layer assembly technology to improve its flame retardancy properties. Two-dimensional melamine-phytate nanoflakes were successfully formed and deposited on the bamboo surface, leading to the earlier degradation of bamboo into char. The peak heat release rates of treated bamboo slices were significantly reduced, showcasing the effectiveness of the MP coating in promoting the formation of thermally stable char for improved flame retardancy and flame spread suppression.
