Overburdening of peer reviewers: A multi-stakeholder perspective on causes and effects

Anna Severin et al.

Summary: The study found that stakeholders in academia perceive reviewing burden as unevenly distributed, attributing this issue to an increase in manuscript submissions, inefficient handling, lack of institutionalized peer review, inadequate instructions, and recruiting strategies for reviewers. These issues are believed to be related to an incentive structure that prioritizes publications over peer review in academia.

The editor-manuscript game

J. A. Garcia et al.

Summary: This paper examines an editor's incentives to issue a desk decision or to send the paper to external peer reviewers. It finds that even editors with the best expertise and intentions may not be able to assess the manuscript's quality perfectly. High-ability editors tend to send fewer papers to external review as a way to signal their ability.
