Grain size-dependent energy partition in phase transition of NiTi shape memory alloys studied by molecular dynamics simulation

Kai Nie et al.

Summary: As the grain size decreases, fundamental changes in phase transition behavior of nanocrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys occur, characterized by a transition from atomic interface friction in phase transition to plastic deformation caused by grain boundary sliding.

Experimental and molecular dynamics studies of phase transformations during cryogenic thermal cycling in complex TiNi-based crystalline/amorphous alloys

J. Jiang et al.

Summary: In TiNi-based crystalline/amorphous alloys, superelasticity in the crystalline phase and dislocation sinking in the amorphous phase lead to high ductility and outstanding anti-fatigue properties. Cryogenic thermal cycling experiments on complex TiNi-based alloys showed an increase in critical martensitic phase transformation stress with the number of cycles, reaching a maximum at 10 cycles, and initial B19' martensite transformed to B2 austenite due to thermal induced stable transformation. Thermal fatigue during cryogenic cycling resulted in a lamellar structure of alternating amorphous and crystalline layers growing dominantly into the amorphous matrix.

Dissecting functional degradation in NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions via atomistic simulations

Won-Seok Ko et al.

Summary: The study used molecular dynamics simulations to understand the functional degradation of nano-scaled NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions. The influence of amorphous-like grain boundaries or surface regions on the mechanical response under cyclic compression was revealed. The degraded superelasticity under cyclic loading was attributed to accumulated plastic deformation and retained martensite from a synergetic contribution of amorphous and crystalline regions, with proposed methods for recovery and sustainable operation.

Atomistic simulations on orientation dependent martensitic transformation during nanoindentation of NiTi shape-memory alloys

Won-Seok Ko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the orientation-dependent mechanical responses of nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys during nanoindentations, highlighting the importance of anisotropy in martensite formation. The results suggest that the orientation-dependency of indentation load-depth curves is primarily driven by the anisotropy in the preferred growth direction of the martensite phase and the amount of martensite phase formed beneath the indenter tip.

Orientation-dependent plastic deformation mechanisms and competition with stress-induced phase transformation in microscale NiTi

Won Seok Choi et al.

Summary: Understanding the orientation-dependent deformation behavior of NiTi shape-memory alloys at small length scales is crucial for designing nano- and micro-electromechanical systems. The study reveals that plastic deformation modes include slip and deformation twinning, with the martensitic transformation depending on crystal orientation. Results suggest that operative martensitic transformation mode may be size-dependent.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Ni4Ti3 precipitation on the strain fields and thermally-induced martensitic transformation in NiTi alloy, using molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analyses. New self-accommodation structures were discovered, suggesting a potential design route for low hysteresis microactuators.
