Spectrum of embrittling potencies and relation to properties of symmetric-tilt grain boundaries

Doruk Aksoy et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries in metallic materials can have various stable and metastable structures, with properties that can be altered by solute segregation. A new formulation combining embrittling potencies associated with solute segregation with site-occupancy statistics was presented in this work. Molecular statics calculations on a large number of grain boundaries revealed the importance of considering both the energies associated with embrittlement and the probability of occupancy to describe the embrittling nature of a grain boundary.

Entropy matters in grain boundary segregation

P. Lejcek et al.

Summary: The detrimental influence of ignoring the segregation entropy term in grain boundary segregation is shown, despite its importance in the process. The contribution of entropy is frequently neglected, possibly due to the lack of routines for theoretical determination. Progress in advanced theoretical methods is hoped to improve the understanding of grain boundary segregation significantly in the near future.

Segregation and embrittlement of gold grain boundaries

Daniel Scheiber

Summary: This study investigates the segregation behaviors of 27 alloying elements to an Au grain boundary and surface, identifying both detrimental and beneficial elements for alloying. The methodology and results are validated by comparing to experimental results from over two centuries, revealing the main origin of the grain boundary cohesion effect.
