Disconnection-me diate d migration of interfaces in microstructures: I. continuum model

Jian Han et al.

Summary: Understanding, predicting, and controlling microstructural evolution in crystalline materials is a longstanding goal. This study presents a new model for the motion of curved interfaces that respects the crystallography and microscopic mechanisms of interface motion, providing a comprehensive understanding of interface migration under various driving forces.

Doubly degenerate diffuse interface models of anisotropic surface diffusion

Marco Salvalaglio et al.

Summary: This study extends the classical degenerate Cahn-Hilliard model to anisotropic surface diffusion and demonstrates its capabilities for weak and strong anisotropic cases through numerical simulations. The proposed model provides a variational and energy dissipative approach for anisotropic surface diffusion problems with material-specific parameters, enabling large-scale simulations.

Doubly degenerate diffuse interface models of surface diffusion

Marco Salvalaglio et al.

Summary: In this study, we discuss two doubly degenerate Cahn-Hilliard models for isotropic surface diffusion, focusing on degeneracy in the mobility function and a restriction function associated with the chemical potential. Our computational results indicate that the restriction functions provide more accurate approximations of surface diffusion. We also explore a slight generalization of a non-variational model and introduce a new variational and energy dissipative model, both of which can be related to the generalized non-variational model and show convergence to the sharp-interface limit of surface diffusion through formal matched asymptotics.

Equation of motion for grain boundaries in polycrystals

Luchan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes continuum equations of motion for grain boundaries based on disconnection dynamics, accounting for mechanical constraints in polycrystals to develop a zero-shear constrained model for grain boundary motion. The model is easily implemented in a computationally efficient framework and suitable for large-scale simulation of polycrystalline microstructure evolution. Validation of the proposed model was conducted through direct comparisons with full multi-disconnection mode simulations.

Corners in phase-field theory

Thomas Philippe

Summary: Regularization is necessary for phase-field models with strongly anisotropic surface energy to remove the ill posedness of dynamic equations. A new length scale, the corner size, is introduced, and for large corner sizes relative to interface thickness, the phase-field method converges asymptotically towards the sharp-interface theory. When the corner size is smaller than the interface width, the shape of corners differs from the sharp-interface picture, but the phase transition at the interface retains the same properties as the classical problem.
