Moire heterostructures as a condensed-matter quantum simulator

Dante M. Kennes et al.

Summary: Twisted van der Waals heterostructures have attracted attention as a robust quantum simulation platform for studying strongly correlated physics and topology in quantum materials. Their versatility, feasibility to realize many-body quantum models, and availability of experimental readout protocols open up new possibilities in accessible physics and hold promise for future technological applications.

Hyperbolic enhancement of photocurrent patterns in minimally twisted bilayer graphene

S. S. Sunku et al.

Summary: The study focuses on quasi-periodic moire patterns and their impact on electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene. Using scanning probe photocurrent imaging, nanoscale variations of the Seebeck coefficient at domain walls separating stacking regions are resolved, with an observed hyperbolic enhancement of the photocurrent pattern in the mid-infrared frequency range. This illustrates the ability of nano-photocurrent technique to probe nanoscale electronic inhomogeneities in two-dimensional materials.

Nanoscale lattice dynamics in hexagonal boron nitride moire superlattices

S. L. Moore et al.

Summary: In this study, the lattice dynamics of twisted hexagonal boron nitride layers were investigated using nano-infrared spectroscopy, revealing local and stacking-dependent variations in optical phonon frequencies due to interaction with the graphite substrate. First-principles calculations showed a symmetry-breaking interaction with the underlying graphite in twisted hBN, leading to systematic variations in in-plane optical phonon frequencies among triangular domains and domain walls in the hBN moire superlattices.

Strain fields in twisted bilayer graphene

Nathanael P. Kazmierczak et al.

Summary: Twisted bilayer graphene exhibits two-regime reconstruction mechanics based on twist angle, with applied heterostrain accumulating anisotropically in saddle-point regions to generate distinctive striped strain phases. Nanoscale spatial fluctuations in twist angle and uniaxial heterostrain were statistically evaluated, revealing the prevalence of short-range disorder in moire heterostructures. This study provides insights into the twist-angle-dependent electronic behavior and structural relaxation, disorder, and strain in moire materials.

Measuring local moire lattice heterogeneity of twisted bilayer graphene

Tjerk Benschop et al.

Summary: A new method is introduced to continuously map inhomogeneities of a moire lattice on twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and it is found that the variation in twist angle has a significant effect on the electronic structure.
