Capsid opening enables genome release of iflaviruses

Karel Skubnik et al.

Summary: The Iflaviridae family consists of economically important viruses affecting western honeybees. These viruses induce genome release through conformational changes triggered by acidic pH, with different mechanisms for releasing genomes from their capsids.

Virion Structure and In Vitro Genome Release Mechanism of Dicistrovirus Kashmir Bee Virus

Liya Mukhamedova et al.

Summary: Infections with Kashmir bee virus (KBV) are deadly for honeybees and contribute to the decline in honeybee colonies. The exposure of KBV to acidic pH leads to the cracking of capsids and rapid release of genomes, which may be a shared mechanism for virus release. Therapeutic compounds stabilizing contacts between capsid proteins could potentially prevent the genome release of KBV.
