One-step laser induced conversion of a gelatin-coated polyimide film into graphene: Tunable morphology, surface wettability and microsupercapacitor applications

Wang WenTao et al.

Summary: The latest advances have demonstrated the formation of porous graphene on polyimide films through laser induction process. By adjusting the laser fluence, the surface morphology of the carbonized layer can be controlled, leading to a significant transition in surface wettability. The combination of morphology evolution and surface chemistry plays a crucial role in achieving a Janus superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic surface wettability under specific laser fluence.

Controlling the laser induction and cutting process on polyimide films for kirigami-inspired supercapacitor applications

Wang WenTao et al.

Summary: Inspired by kirigami, a stretchable supercapacitor was designed by controlling laser induction and cutting processes on polyimide film. Experimental and theoretical results showed that laser power, scan rate, and focus condition greatly influenced the size, shape, and morphology of the carbonized lines. Optimization of laser parameters led to the fabrication of kirigami-inspired supercapacitors with reliable electrochemical properties and editable mechanical flexibility.

Bioinspired Gradient Conductivity and Stiffness for Ultrasensitive Electronic Skins

Youngoh Lee et al.

Summary: This paper presents a high-performance electronic skin sensor that achieves high sensitivity piezoresistive sensing and linear response by controlling tactile stress transfer and current transfer within gradient structures. The sensor demonstrates efficient stress localization and current pathway activation, resulting in high pressure sensitivity, rapid response time, low detection threshold, low operating voltage, and durability during repetitive pressure cycles. The sensor's performance enables applications such as acoustic wave detection, gas differentiation, tactile manipulation, and pulse pressure waveform monitoring.

Laser-Induced Graphene from Paper for Mechanical Sensing

Bohdan Kulyk et al.

Summary: This study presents strain and bending sensors fabricated by irradiating regular filter paper with a CO2 laser, and systematically investigates the influence of different process parameters on the conversion of cellulose fibers into LIG. The material obtained exhibits porous electrically conductive weblike structures with sheet resistances as low as 32 Omega sq(-1). The functionality of both strain and bending sensors is demonstrated for different sensing configurations, highlighting the versatility and potential of this material for low-cost mechanical sensing applications.

Transfer printed laser induced graphene strain gauges for embedded sensing in fiberglass composites

LoriAnne Groo et al.

Summary: This study utilizes transfer printing of laser induced graphene (LIG) strain gauges onto commercial fiberglass prepreg for in situ self-sensing of strain in fiber-reinforced composites, eliminating the need for external sensor bonding. The embedded strain sensor is fully integrated within the final composite material, reducing weight and offering customization options. The LIG strain gauge can effectively track static and dynamic strain variations in the composite material, providing valuable information for structural health monitoring.
