In-situ and in-operando analysis of voltage losses using sense wires for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers

Zhenye Kang et al.

Summary: The development of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers requires understanding processes at the materials and interface levels to achieve performance and lifetime targets. An internal voltage sensing method allows observation of voltage drops within the electrolyzer cell, separating total cell resistance into different components. By experimenting with cells with different anode porous transport layers, it was found that changing properties of the layers significantly impact resistances, and enhancing them with protective coatings can reduce anode resistance and improve performance.

Ionomer Optimization for Water Uptake and Swelling in Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer: Hydrogen Evolution Electrode

Garrett Huang et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen produced through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis is a promising, low-cost chemical storage solution that requires a balance between ionic conductivity, water uptake, and ionomer swelling in the ACI to improve the performance of AEM-based devices. Higher IEC ACIs with light crosslinking are preferred in the HER electrode to fine-tune water uptake and ionomer swelling for optimal cell performance and reduced operating voltages.

Water-Fed Hydroxide Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Enabled by a Fluoride-Incorporated Nickel-Iron Oxyhydroxide Oxygen Evolution Electrode

Junwu Xiao et al.

Summary: A new dissolved oxygen and galvanic corrosion method was developed to synthesize vertically aligned fluoride-incorporated nickel-iron oxyhydroxide nanosheet arrays for an efficient self-supported oxygen evolution electrode. When integrated with a hydroxide exchange membrane electrolyzer, the system achieved a high performance of 1020 mA cm(-2) at 1.8 V and demonstrated catalyst stability over >160 hours of continuous operation at 200 mA cm(-2). This work offers a potential pathway for large-scale production of low-cost hydrogen using intermittent renewable energy sources.

Integrated Reference Electrodes in Anion-Exchange-Membrane Electrolyzers: Impact of Stainless-Steel Gas-Diffusion Layers and Internal Mechanical Pressure

Qiucheng Xu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to separate the responses of the anode and cathode in polarization and impedance measurements by integrating a reference electrode with the MEA, revealing how changes in the fiber diameter of stainless-steel gas-diffusion layers (GDLs) and the thickness of the cathode GDL simultaneously affect the performance of the anode and cathode in alkaline-membrane electrolyzers. This approach guides the development of high-performance alkaline-membrane water electrolyzers and demonstrates a useful strategy for studying structure-activity relationships in the MEA.

Xinyao Lu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the anion exchange and water dynamics of a phosphonium-based alkaline anion exchange membrane during methanol oxidation process using EQCM, highlighting the importance of water transport in electrochemical processes in anion exchange membrane fuel cells. It was found that CO32- and HCOO- generated during methanol oxidation were absorbed into the membrane, replacing OH-, and this exchange process was reversible, providing insights into anion exchange processes and the significance of characterizing hydrated membranes under electrochemical conditions.

Constructing Ultrathin W-Doped NiFe Nanosheets via Facile Electrosynthesis as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Water Splitting

Lei Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and fast electrodeposition process was used to fabricate ultrathin nanosheet NiFeW bifunctional catalysts for water splitting, which showed exceptional performance in alkaline media and achieved low cell voltage in a full electrolyzer configuration. The remarkable efficiencies were mainly attributed to W doping, which effectively modulates the morphology and electronic structure of NiFe hydroxides to boost charge-transfer kinetics for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ultrathin NiFeW nanosheets with an efficient fabrication strategy hold promising potential as bifunctional electrodes for alkaline water electrolyzers.

Tailoring the Surface Chemistry of Anion Exchange Membranes with Zwitterions: Toward Antifouling RED Membranes

Diego Pintossi et al.

Summary: Fouling is a major concern in harvesting salinity gradient energy using reverse electrodialysis (RED). This study focused on developing antifouling membranes by surface modification of a commercial anion exchange membrane with zwitterionic layers. While zwitterionic monomers effectively delayed fouling onset, zwitterionic brushes not only delayed the onset but also slowed down the growth of the fouling layer, leading to higher power density outputs in RED applications.

Summary: A series of side-chain-type poly(arylene ether sulfone)s were designed and synthesized to obtain anion exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and good dimensional stability. One specific membrane, PAES-QDTPM-0.30, showed excellent conductivity and stability due to the concentration of ion clusters and the side-chain-type structure. The membranes all maintained over 82% of their conductivity after alkali treatment.

Corrosion-engineered bimetallic oxide electrode as anode for high-efficiency anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer

Jooyoung Lee et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that corroding conventional nickel foam in the presence of exotic Fe3+ cations can transform it into a high catalytic electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction. The resulting electrode, made of densely packed Ni0.75Fe2.25O4 nanoparticles less than 5 nm in size, outperforms state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst by requiring a lower overpotential for OER activity. This approach offers a simple, cost-effective, and scalable route to high-performance OER electrodes for efficient AEM water electrolysis.

On the effect of anion exchange ionomer binders in bipolar electrode membrane interface water electrolysis

Britta Mayerhoefer et al.

Summary: Bipolar membrane|electrode interface water electrolyzers (BPEMWE) show superior performance compared to proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers, primarily due to reduced contact resistances stemming from adhesive effects between oppositely charged polymers. The study indicates that the local pH at a metal surface is strongly correlated with the pH of the surrounding solution rather than the type of ionomer used.
